Instructions for Sedation

  1. It is critical for you to not eat any food or drink any non-clear liquids (for example: coffee, milk, orange juice) for at least six (6) hours before your appointment. However, you may drink clear liquids (such as water and apple juice) up to two hours before the procedure. Take your medications as normal unless instructed otherwise.
    • If your surgery is in the morning, do not eat or drink anything between bedtime and your scheduled appointment.
    • If your surgery is in the afternoon, you may eat a light breakfast (for example: toast or cereal) before 7:00 AM. Afterwards, do not eat anything until after the appointment.
    • Unless specified by Dr. Kottenstette, all medicines taken on a routine basis should be continued without interruption. Please swallow with a minimal amount of water if within 2 hours of your appointment.
    • If your medications were changed or stopped for this appointment, resume your normal dosing after the appointment as specifically recommended by Dr. Kottenstette.
    • If you are receiving sedation for any surgical procedures please take 600 mg Iburpofen/Advil 1 hour prior to your scheduled appointment unless unable to take Iburporfen/Advil/NSAIDS.
  2. An adult (18 years or older) must accompany you to the office and remain here throughout the entire procedure. Following the sedation, your escort must take you home, and an adult should remain with you the rest of the day or until you are fully awake.
  3. A parent or legal guardian must accompany minors (persons under the age of 18 years of age).
  4. For intravenous sedation (IVCS), patients should wear clothing that is not restricting to the neck or arms. Please wear a short sleeve shirt. If the weather is cool, wear a jacket or sweater that you can remove.
  5. We may ask you to remove your contact lenses, so you may want to bring a pair of glasses.
  6. Please do not wear fingernail polish (on at least one finger) because this inhibits our monitors from working properly.
  7. Following the sedation, you should refrain from driving an automobile, signing any legal documents or engaging in any activity that requires alertness until the next day (for 24 hours). Avoid alcoholic beverages until the next day, as well.

The sedation appointment may be rescheduled if any of the above instructions are not followed!
